GLENDORA, Calif. -- NHRA's Southeast Division, in conjunction with John Bleakley RV Centers of Douglasville, Ga., has announced that the popular Top Sportsman class will be contested at several NHRA events this season. The John Bleakley RV Centers Top Sportsman Championship will be contested at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events at Bristol Dragway (July 18-20), Atlanta Dragway (Aug. 8-10), and Darlington Int'l Dragway (Oct. 4-6) and at the Citrus Nationals at Moroso Motorsports Park (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) and Sportsman Open at Orlando Speed World Dragway (Dec. 13-15). The class will be an all-run eliminator at each event, and all five races will count toward points. The overall points champion will receive $2,000, a Gold Card for Top Sportsman events in 2003, a Wally, and a special-edition champion's jacket. The series runner-up will receive $1,000, and the third-place finisher will earn $500. The low qualifier at each race will receive $200, and the event purse will pay $1,500 to the winner, $500 to the runner-up, $200 to the semifinalists, and $75 beginning in round three. The entry fee is $125 per event, and the maximum dial is 8.00. An NHRA competition license, membership, and current chassis certification is required. The weight minimums are 2,350 pounds for naturally aspirated big-block-powered entries and 2,600 for supercharged or nitrous-equipped entries. Small-block-powered entries with or without nitrous oxide may weigh 2,000 pounds. For information, call the division office, (352) 374-9922.
